Match Report and Results

What a story I have got for you this week…

Sunday morning 6.45am. Sanchez calls “oh I am in bed and it’s going to be hot today”.
7am I arrived at Dunheved Golf Course an hour before play to find most of the crew already there in their blue shirts ready for play. They must have wet the bed.

I grabbed a cart and loaded a bag of muscle relaxants on board (chilled of course) for my group. Off to the nets for a hit with 4 terrible swings of the driver and 4 not so good 7 irons. It was going to be a long day.

Theo was collecting the cash and George sorting the cards. George was wondering who to put on our group as it was just Daz and Gaz in group 2 at this point, so I invited George to join our TV group and he happily accepted.

As the team headed for the first tee the fog was a thick as pea soup. And you could only see a ball for the first 50 meters before it disappeared into the white sheet of fog.

So we were away a few minutes before 8am. 14 in all, two groups of 3 and two groups of 4.

Scotty had won the trophy last week and as there was no trophy up for grabs I think he gave it a miss (he might say he was travelling, but we know better).

So it wasn’t long before the TV group was up. As I took to the tee, I thought oh hell I have 10 onlookers, can I even make contact with the ball? Well I lent into it and gave it an all mighty heave ho. “Did any one see that?” Numerous reply’s was it was straight down the centre. I was amazed. George stepped up and went right side, and Daz took to his trusty iron for the first shot of the day.

I was amazed that I was only 65 metres to the green middle of fairway. So it was time to get into the muscle relaxants, but our group started with a 3,4,4 and things were set for a fabulous day.

2nd hole, I have hit straight over the trees to be 10 metres short of the water, wow Gaz. However, I stuffed my 2nd shot and recovered for a 6.

3rd hole was the drive and pitch. George as always straight down the middle. I have smashed one over the trees to the left of the bushes just 45 metres from the green, another great hit. Daz went to the right edge to open up the green. George hits his second shot just 6 foot from the pin, wow, what a shot George, I am thinking he has got drive and pitch easily until I chipped one just 2 foot from the pin. (Sorry George). Again, great scores all round fo the TV group, and I was now even with the stick after the 3rd hole. Great birdie Gaz.

[We will take a break here so you can get a coffee while I look for my phone on the 3rd hole. Yes I lost it, but after 3 attempts looking, it was found.]

We are back, and the TV group had slipped back 1 place and we were all into the muscle relaxants (including George).

4th hole was terrible (par 5) but sunk a long putt to salvage a 6 Still not bad Gaz as only 1 over off the stick.

By this stage it was hot, real hot and heading for 40.

So the game progressed and as the golfing gods were looking down on me ended up with 2 nearest the pins, just missing a 3rd by a foot, and two drive a pitch holes. 4 balls in a day must be a record?

So lets speed things up a little and jump to the 17th hole. So, I pick up my 9 iron and stager to the tee (we were in a cart, how did you guys do it? —— it was so hot!). I steady myself knowing this is the “Eagles Nest” and last week missed out by like 1.5 centimetres. I take a steady swing and it was sailing for the hole. Almost identical to the previous round landing right next to the pin.

The boys in the group in front got out the tape measure, it was going to be close, two weeks running, come on Gaz.

Daz was sick of my voice and wanted out the cart, and even offered to pay out the “Eagles Nest” from his own pocket if I would just shut up. Sorry Daz!

As it happens I had just missed by millimetres again. I even tried stretching the tape. Dam! So close again. But I picked up my 2nd birdie of the day and I could have had 3 if Chris’s club hit that bloody crow back on the 13th. Chris should win an award for club hurling, and I hope you did not damage your club?

Everyone was saying. “Was that your orange ball in that crows mouth.” Well “Yes it was!”.

I think by the end of play we were all pretty tried and hot. Gaz won the day with a net 63, and John Bateman coming runner up with a net 68.

Ray was out to take 6 shots off me (again). Ray, there is a plus sign on that calculator you know.

Let’s hope for cooler weather next week at George’s River.

I encourage all of you to write a few words about your round and send it to me to post, or even a few photos.

Daz now has a login, so I will leave the write up to him. You are all probably sick of my voice by now, I know Daz is! (Wink).

See you all next week 26th March at 8.00am – Georges River Golf Course for the 1st round of the Stableford Club Championship (please arrive 30 minutes before play).
